En stark Wanda Diamond League säsong planerad under OS-år

Wanda Diamond League kommer under 2021 att erbjuda en stark säsong medan världens bästa friidrottare förbereder sig för OS i Tokyo. På diamondleague.com presenterades idag några nyheter i tävlingsprogrammet:

This year’s Wanda Diamond League will now begin in Gateshead on 23rd May following a few minor alterations to the 2021 season calendar. The Wanda Diamond League season opener will be held in the UK for the first time in 2021, with Gateshead stepping in to replace Rabat as the first host city on this year’s circuit.

Detta betyder att säsongsöppningen inte kommer att ske i Rabat som planerat på grund av den pågående pandemin. Andra förändringar i tävlingsprogrammet är hur Roms Pietro Mennea Golden Gala förflyttas till Florens och Oslos Bislett Games byter datum till 1 juli.

Utöver detta planerar Wanda Diamond League att erbjuda en full serie där atleterna tävlar för att få en plats i finalen och the Diamond Trophy.

Sebastian Coe, Diamond League Chair, säger: “This is an incredibly important year for our athletes as they prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and less than a year later the World Athletics Championships Oregon22. Competition and training are two very different things so the Wanda Diamond League and our other one-day meetings around the world will give athletes the opportunity to qualify for events, earn World Ranking points and prize money and benchmark their performances against the competition they will face in Tokyo and then Oregon in 2022.”
